I’ve been wanting a project to practice using an angle grinder. I didn’t want to start with a Sam Maloof chair right away. Along came Wood Whisperer – Marc Spagnuolo and his guild projects. The Contemplation Bench was perfect for what I wanted. The Wood Whisperer videos and live chats are excellent as were the supplied templates and other information.

This project also allowed me to add to my hand tool collection. I purchased a 4 ½” angle grinder along with 3 Holey Galahad grinding disks. These disks do produce a large amount of dust which Marc also warned about. However I was able to direct the grinding dust so clean-up was fairly easy. I also wore my Dus-T tee shirt that my wife got me for Christmas. The tee shirt worked excellent for keeping any dust out of my lungs.

I was also able to get a set off Auriou rasps. Initially I tried to final shape with the rasps I had, but immediately stopped when I started to grind deep ridges into the wood. After a few emails explaining what I wanted to do with Deneb from Lie-Nielson I decided to get the 12” 6 grain Cabinet Makers rasp, the 9” 10 grain Cabinet Makers rasp, the 7” 13 grain Modeller’s rasp, and the ⅜” 12 grain Curved Ironing rasp. It’s amazing how easy and cleanly these rasps remove wood. I see more of these rasps in my future.

This bench is made from White Oak because it will sit outside. I finished it with Hemp Shield clear outdoor oil. Hemp Shield has become my go-to finish for my outdoor projects. Hemp Shield customer service has been awesome answering my questions.

Very nice lil Practice project… Looks COOL!

I shoulda done something like that before starting on my two Maloof Dining chairs…

Curious… How did you connect the legs to the top?

Thank you.

Nice looking bench, must have been a lot of grinding. Legs look like they are attached with mitered open tenons.
