My first project that I actually painted and applied finish to.

Inspired by:
58pilot's Child Desk
poppatom's Kids Activity Desk

Plan from:
Wood Magazine (Vol #83) November 1995. Page 70.

Used red oak for everything except the plywood top and storage box bottom. Used materials I already had in the garage, so the plywood top is just some shop grade plywood from Home Depot I had left over from some projects.

The circles are just a theme for the desk, and also cover some of the screw holes. They are not wheels. Finished it with 8 coats of water based poly. I let my 5 year old son pick the colors for the painted parts. His choices were: yellow, fluorescent orange, key lime green and candy pink :)

Also, for the pencil/pen holder, I realized all I had was a 2 3/8” Forstner bit for a hole that big, and that a SCH 40 2” PVC outer diameter is also 2 3/8”. So, just used the pipes as holders.

Cheers,
-Ganesh

Very nice. I’ve been planning on making two of this design for my kids for a little while. It looks great.

Thanks for the kind words, folks :)

Brad18 – My son loves it. One thing I would do if I do this again would be to slightly extend the length of the desk. Or maybe make it less rounded on the rear sides of the longitudinal runners. It is a bit tipsy if he sits on the rear edge of the seat.

Don’t show my son, he’ll want one and I’m not even finished with his loft bed yet ;-) Eventually I’ll make him one of these to go under the loft bed.
