This is my version of “Thor’s Hammer” that Steve Ramsey at, Woodworking For Mere Mortals, and Brian at Garage Woodworks both made (Brian didn’t call his Thor’s Hammer) from the ShopNotes Plans (ShopNotes Issue #2 March 1992). This is my first ever mallet build. It happened that I have the issue and had some scrap pieces that would work. The outside pieces are Hard Maple, while the center is Cherry. The handle is Red Oak that I have a lot of, cut-offs from a saw mill. The plans call for lead split shot, I used BB’s @ $4.57 from Wal-Mart. The price of lead split shot was twice that or more. I haven’t put a finish on it yet but I plan to put a couple of coats of BLSO as soon as I go get some.
-- When asked what I did to make life worthwhile in my lifetime....I can respond with a great deal of pride and satisfaction, "I served a career in the United States Navy."
