So, it’s not really a box, but it does have a drawer and it holds jewelry. So, for today it is a jewely box….
At any rate, this is a gift I am building for my wife. I asked her for some ideas the other day; some things we could use around the house. One of her first responses was “a place to hang necklaces and a shelf to put my perfume on…” So, while I was working in the shop the other day I came across some Walnut that I salvaged from a dismantled project from early on in my ‘career’. I started sketching some ideas and this is what I came up with. I didn’t do any detailed drawings; just took the sketches and started playing around until I came up with some dimensions I liked. The corners/dividers are mostly butt-joints with dowel reinforcements.
The jewelry will hang from an inset length of 3/16” stainless steel bar stock that was polished with 0000 steel wool and wax.
Finish is an oil/varnish blend and wax. The drawer sides/bottom are Lyptus, and the interior is finished with a homemade polish made from ultra-diluted shellac (ala JK).
Pics aren’t so hot; I plan to take some better ones when I get it on the wall…. Let me know what you think.
Regards, JM

Simple, elegant and wonderfully artful. Sketch it up as a set of plans and post. It ought to become popular.

I really like that design and added it to my favorites as a future project. As Microsuffer stated, simple elegance. Thanks for sharing

Hi Jarrod;
This is a great design!
The workmanship looks to be very well done.
If I were to build a jewelry box for my wife, I would make it much smaller. lol

i love this, sort of like an idea i have for the living room wall, this helps me imagine it more tangibly. how would you hang something this large on the wall? any suggestions?

great job. that’s as much a piece of art as a functional “box”.
I was just down in Eagle’s Nest a few weeks ago, what a beautiful place, I love going there when I can. Waking up looking out over the lake is very inspiring, I’d imagine, for woodworkers.

Thanks for all the comments; I really appreciate the encouragement.
Brady – I just made a french cleat for the back, and a small block that will be mounted to the wall inside/behind the panel on the right to help keep it from tipping. It’s not that large, and it’s pretty light. It’s 24”h x 27” w.
Thanks again, JM

Brian – it’s a mixture of 1/3 BLO, 1/3 varnish (I think this one was Valspar semi-gloss, though I’m constantly trying different ones), and 1/3 mineral spirits. Also, there is a top-coat recipe that I sometimes use from Andy Rae; it is 1 part BLO, 1/2 part quick-drying varnish, and 1/2 part paste wood filler:
