This is a cedar blanket chest with walnut base and walnut around the lid. The walnut gives it more durability to protect against vacuum cleaners etc. The sides are dovetailed and the base and lid pieces have mitred joints with keyways. There are no metal fasteners except for the hinge and handle hardware. I made square dowelling and left the dowels about 1/8” proud. Tung oil finish except for the bottom liner, which is aromatic cedar.

Nice job. I’m guessing that the dovetails are machine done and if so, how did you do them ?

Thanks guys. Yes, I was short of time and used a porter cable dovetail jig, which I don’t really like that much. I was going to pick up a Leigh 24” jig, but never got around to it. What I’d really like is an Akeda, but Kevan isn’t really interested in putting together another production run of them. I’d love to hand cut them, but I always find it a little scary. I built a through joint jig for my table saw, but so far I’ve just fiddled around with it.

The side panels are biscuit joined after dovetailing, because my jig’s only 12”. One thing I did learn – don’t get tung oil on your soft close cylinders. They don’t work consistently if you do.
