King Size Single Bed

Project by Grumpy posted 435 days ago 1981 views 5 times favorited 37 comments Add to Favorites Watch

Here is the King size single bed I just completed for my eldest grandaughter. The Bed Head & Bed End are mortise & tenon Joinery (Beadlock loose tenon system). There are two drawer cabinets underneath with 3 drawers in each.
sketchup was of great assistance because there were several items to fit together. I could look from different angles as well as on top & underneath.
Sketch-02
Sketch-01
The drawer cabinets were biscuit jointed with minimal fixings which were around the wheel assembly. The wheels are at each end of the cabinets & allow for the occasional need to pull the cabinets out for cleaning. a small foot is at each end to level the cabinet.
Cabinet assemply

Wheels & Leg
The cabinets are locked in place with wooden rods through the bed frame (not shown)
Drawer Cabinet
The Drawers are dovetail jointed with fronts added separately. This allowed for fine alignment & spacing.
Drawer Joinery

The end posts were fluted for more visual effect
Joinery
A mat poly finish was applied to the slats.
Complete Bed-01
And here is the finished product
Complete Bed-01

Finished

One happy grandaughter & big a kiss and cuddle for Grumpy.

Nice work Grumpy. Not just the same old same old. I really need to sit down one of these days and learn sketchup. It seems to be of great benefit.

A very nice design for a bed and you have finished it so well. Your sketches show how much efforts you have taken to make the bed perfect. Thanks for several pictures.

Wow, Grumpy, you spent as much time designing it as you did building it and it shows! She must be thrilled. Great project. It’s so nice we can use our talents to share with those we love.

I had never heard of a king size single bed before.

A very unique design, & well crafted, with many features.

Thanks for showing the additional pictures.

Your Granddaughter will cherish this gift of love, for many years.

What can I say that hasn’t been said? Great job, Grumpy.

Oh, by the way, are you sure there are enough slats to support the mattress and box spring? (As my grandfather used to say, anything worth building is worth overbuilding.) :-)

Hi Grumpy;

Fantastic job.

You certainly have learned your way around in sketchup.

The workmanship on both the bed and the finish is terrific.

A very humbling response jocks. Thank you for all the kind words & support. It was a great project that perhaps took longer than necessary but worth it in the end.

Tom, a King size single bed mattress is 1070mm x 2030mm (42” X 80” Approx). I allowed 5mm (3/16”) all round clearance which worked out well.

Charlie, The spacings are fine, the grandaughter is nin years old but time will tell. My son is handy with tools so there won’t be an issue. There is a centre support to take the load as well.

Trim, Rustic, Shared, Bob, Lee, Woodwrecker, Dennis. Thanks for your comments on sketchup. It is a great package. You can plan in detail & have the advantage of seeing how things will fit together. It is time consuming as Bob A suggests & you can get a bit carried away with the finest details which sometimes are not necessary but that’s what makes a Lumberjock.

This is a great looking bed. I like the drawers under the mattress. That may be a modification I make to mine once the grand daughters get too old to visit grandpa! Never enough storage.
