Dipping Boards

Project by closetguy posted 434 days ago 1303 views 49 times favorited 20 comments Add to Favorites Watch

Even though I am a very dedicated red meat and whiskey kind of guy, I love fresh raw veggies. These dipping boards are great for serving up everything together and looks much better than those cheap plastic trays everyone seems to have in their kitchen. The size is 7×20 x 7/8.

I sized the dip well to accommodate the standard store-bought veggie dip container. However, I also wanted to use the board for bread dipping oil. I searched for a month for a nice ceramic bowl to fit it, but the only one I found with the right dimension had “Made in China” stamped on it. This just didn’t seemed right, so I contracted with a pottery lady on Etsy to make up a bunch of bowls to fit the well. I sell these so she makes 20 at a time for me.

The first picture is figured maple and jatoba with walnut accents. The second is maple, cherry, and walnut with the dipping bowl. The third shows a store-bought dip container. I finish them with three coats of General Finishes salad bowl finish. They also have 1/2” rubber feet from Lee Valley to keep them from sliding around.

You should combine the picture with the veggies and the little oriental bowl. Granted, you dirty that little dish and have to wash it, but you’ve already got all those veggies…

Take a picture before the game starts…

I want one. I bet a template would allow you to crank out a bucnh of these. Good gift idea as well as nice functional thing to have.

I actually made a jig to cut these. I use a Freud 1 1/4” bowl bit for the body and a 1/2” straight bit for the dip well. The jig has a toggle clamp on both ends. One end is removeable so you can slide the board blank into it. Then just clamp everything down and route.

Oh boy, I see another project has been added to my to do list. Those look great, and when we have parties, we are always looking for this type of tray. Thanks for the idea.

You’ve got a winning idea and a good application of renewable resources. Keeping away from the imports is also good for your local economy.

If I had someone near me that used small pieces so smartly I would sure fix them up with some unique pieces of wood. Do you get most of your wood from local sawmills?

Just an idea, although you probably thought about it: you can make a template of 4 or 5 squares and have a serving tray for multiple dips. (I mean, instead of one round and one rectangular, have 4 or 5 smaller rectangular areas, seperated by thin walls)

-- The woods are lovely, dark and deep, but I have promises to keep...
