A Quick Table

Project by Russel posted 435 days ago 485 views 1 time favorited 8 comments Add to Favorites Watch

My brother-in-law has been working at his recently purchased cottage; putting up walls and insulation and working with electricity and plumbling and doing all kinds of stuff to make a neglected building a comfortable vacation retreat. He’s done quite well learning quite a few new skills … very impressive.

In his dining area he has an old kitchen table that would look better somewhere else. Since this is a cottage and relatively rustic (by suburb standards) I thought he should have a table made from wood. And, since space is limited, it seemed reasonable to make the table with as small a footprint as possible.

This table is made from some ash I got and didn’t quite know what to do with. When the leaves are dropped, it has a footprint of 20×54. When fully extended the top measures 36×54 and will seat 6 quite comfortably and eight or more if they’re friendly. There are two strips of cherry in the top to add a little flair, but the rest is rather plain. It’s finished with a few coats of wipe-on poly.

Nice job Russell. It looks workbench inspired.

There will be gatherings around that table for years to come.

Nice gathering space you have created Russel. I like the cherry stripes. Thanks for sharing.

Russel, looks good and the space saving capability is a big bonus. I am sure there will be mutiple gatherings around that table and some great vacation stories.

Hi Rulles;

Just curios as to why you didn’t use drop edge router bits in the edges?

Was it just a design decision?

The table looks real good.

Thanks folks.

Jeff, the plan for the table is sort of a “seat of the pants” thing. The legs are a bit of an experiment, I wanted a trestle look yet different.

Lee, I didn’t use a rule joint for a couple reasons. First it was a last minute build; I wanted to give it to my brother in law before his next trip to his cottage and didn’t think much about it until I was almost done. Second, I thought the straight edge would make it look a bit more “rural” since it was meant for a cottage in upper Michigan, so I left it as is. As you can see, the county look is foreign to me. I’m not quite sure what it’s supposed to look like.
