This is the start of a new direction for me. I want to start carving my pieces to give them more of a sculptural quality. This is my first attempt at carving, and I know I have a lot to learn. I really like how the light and shadows give dimension to the piece. This is box elder. It measures 4” tall by 5.5” wide. It is finished with BLO and Briwax. All comments, critiques and suggestions are welcome. Especially on the carving.

Hey Joe – It looks like your off to a great start, your turning looks wonderful as usual. How did you do your carving work? Any power tools used or by hand? You’ve got very nice straight lines and the depth looks even, don’t think I can give you any tips on this one. Great job.

Thanks Dan. It was carved free hand with hand tools. No power tools or indexing on the lathe. It was carved off the lathe.

Great job Joe, I guess you answered my questions. Very unique and a lot more added to the bowl as far as depth and beauty. Great name.

Oddly, the name makes me think of Pumpkin Pie filling (Brand name of Libby’s) and it looks like a great pumpkin, maybe even THE great Pumpkin. ;)
Bottom line though, is that it’s a nice looking piece.

oldskoolmodder, I live about 30 miles from Morton, IL. Morton is the pumpkin capitol of the world. There is a Libby processing plant located there – hence the name.

Joe, I thought you must have used the lathe for indexing but no. Thats a great result for hand work.

Joe, that is so cooool! The carving definitely adds a lot to it too. Great design and great choice of wood.
Very appropriate too with Halloween and Thanksgiving just around the corner.
Thanks for posting.

Joe, You are such a pro at your turning and now you have added a new dimension. You did an excellent job at carving that piece. I can’t believe it was all freehand. Great job..
