Bridge partner having a big-oh birthday → I decided to make a box with exactly 70 pieces.
It took me a week to think up this idea, but once you have it it’s easy: 3×5 is 15 .. plus the backing 16,
times 4 sides is 64 (we ex-computer people are good at the powers-of-2) .. plus a top and bottom is 66,
for 4 more use a rim around the top.

As it turned out, using a top rim for the lid-pivot was easier than pivoting in the body.

Woods: Northern silky oak, Southern silky oak, and Jarrah. About 17cm square, 11 high.

I gave it to him yesterday, thinking that, as a mathematician he would appreciate the piece-count, but noooo,
he only said he admired the workmanship. I had to tell him about the count.

If you wanted 71 pieces, all you have to do is not pivot the lid but add a lid-handle.
If you wanted 72 pieces, you could use a 2-piece handle, or ..

I’m not a box guy, but this one is pretty cool. Well thought out and good attention to detail. Nice job.

Some people just dont understand the thought put into something like this :) I love the idea, and I’m glad your friend likes it, even if he doesnt get all the counting ;) Great job! I like the way it plays with your head a little when you first look at it :)

A nice little project and gift…although I am not so sure about the little with 70 pieces in it. Very time consuming I am guessing….well done.

Bats: there used to be some joke(s) about basketweaving and the funny-farm. I made a basket .. are he and I inmates of the bridge-club a funny farm ?

Dave: no prob 70 pcs, 60 of them are the same width.
Oops I mean 60 started as the same width. Made the horiz ones go around the corner, but it was getting close to the deadline (the birthday), so the vert ones were cut. Way easier, more weave-like anyway.
As for time ? okay, it might have been about 30 hrs. Most of my boxes are. Coz I’m always making it up as I go.

Wonderful box! Great basket weave design, pleasing wood combo and very nice lid. Great job!
