I do volunteer work for a local bootstrap charity called Blissful Bedrooms.
They choose handicapped, inner city kids, and make over their bedrooms in a weekend. Since many of these kids are confined to wheelchairs, it’s important to give them a nice bedroom environment. They interview the child, and find out what the bedroom theme should be. These pieces are for Nikolye. His build was completed this past weekend. It was a big success.
He wanted a Jamaican, reggae music studio theme…and his favorite reggae star is Bob Marley (mine too).
One of my tasks was to build a lion headboard for his bed. The first pic is the finished piece, and the second pic was my inspiration…a poster that was found online. The third pic is the enlarged pattern, and the next pic was the piece before painting.
The yellow face is 3/4” baltic birch, and all the other yellow pieces were cut from 1/2” BB. The red and green pieces were cut from 1/4” MDF. The head has a total of +/- 80 pieces, and is 48” wide x 54” high.
The face and backing were cut with a jigsaw, and the dread locks were cut on my scroll saw.
In the 5th pic is a 4’ diameter peace sign, a scrolled portrait of Bob Marley, and a scrolled name with 3 little birds on top. The final pic is a driftwood mobile with peace signs (it was later painted).
Nicolye loves his new bedroom, and I had a lot of fun helping to make his dream come true.
If you want to see more about the bedroom, or the Blissful Bedroom charity, go to the link above, or find them on FB. Feel free to donate for the next bedroom project, or volunteer…if you live in the NYC area.
Thanks for looking
