dovetail secret revealed

WOW! This is regarding all the questions from a post of mine from earlier today “puzzling Dovetail”. So many of you are asking for the explaination, I thought I would just do it in here. The second pic shows the secret. The tail is sloped on the bottom and the pin end wood is ramped to allow the tail to slide in and up until it is flush. Pretty simple in theory but alot harder to accomplish cleanly. Hope you all have enjoyed this post. Craven

Very similar the one of the mallets I made some time ago. Wish my dovetails turned out as nice as yours!

Well, this is interesting! Its cool too. But it seems like it becomes more of a mortise and tenon then a dovetail joint simply because it can slide backwards and out, whereas a true dovetail joint has to be lifted out. It looks like a great joint that confuses the eye, but I’d think you have to have it pretty tight and glued well for it to be a staple long lasting joint. In that case would you use alternate ways of fastening such as a dowel through the bottom to keep it from sliding back?

Nicely done. Good-looking tools, right down to the scalpel. I can see you took great care to layout and execute this.

that picture is worth paragraphs of explanation!, even after it was correctly guessed. Now I feel like I have a shot at it – versus wondering how to fill in the imagined empty space that the slope on the tail fills in.
