Here is the latest creation from my workshop. The table is to be used as a manicure table, and is designed to the customers requirements.
The measurements are 750mm (H) x 800mm (W) cm x 350 mm (D) closed. Raising the leaf, increases the depth to 600 mm.
The main material is Black Walnut, the secondary material is Birch (drawer sides, back and base), the inlay is purple heart.
The table has no stain or grain filler, as this would have made it too dark, and I really wanted to show the book matched table off. The final finish was 3 coats of Osmo polyx oil sanded to 600 grit, and the final protection is 2 coats of Fiddes Mellow wax (Georgian Mahogany).
The customer wanted some storage within the table and also wings/leaves on the side. When I investigated the drawer size, I found that conventional drawers would have been too small to meet the needs of the customer. I was also not very happy with the appearance of extra leaves on the sides of the table. So as compromise, I made false drawer fronts, highlighted with Purple heart to draw the eye away from the sides of the table. The drawers on the side of the table now are large enough inside for the customer and also serve as the table top extensions required.
A fun project, the total time to complete this project was 45 hours, including the design, redesign and finishing.
There are more photographs on my website for those of you who are interested.

A very attractive, & petite design Tony.
Also great craftsmanship.

Very nice design. Unique. Beautifully finished. And what more to say..
One question : Do you need to turn or pull the false front drawer’s knob to open the side drawer?

Woodorm: The knobs are purely decorative, the handles/pulls for the drawers are the lids/extensions.
Bob: Ultra modern – Oh dear! I was trying to get a classic look – Tapered pencil legs, M&T and Dovetail joinery, Leaf table extension with a rule joint.
I guess for people at our age, Sheraton (1751 – 1806) and Chippendale (1718 – 1799) are mere whippersnappers and are producing modern style furniture.
Sawdust: Thanks, but it was the Leigh jig, not my saw and chisels that made them so tight.

Had a look at the pictures on your website of the table, very nice indeed, but I’m not keen on the purpleheart, perhaps when its faded a little? Sorry for the crit! Did the cutomer request it?

This is great, Tony. I like how the design turned out based on the needs of your customer. It is very delicate and beautiful… perfect for its purpose.

Everyone else has said all that I would say. I see a little Shaker style in the legs though.

Bloonose - No offence taken. The PH was my inspiration, with the customers approval.
