Midnight Serenade

Project by trifern posted 300 days ago 480 views 1 time favorited 13 comments Add to Favorites Watch

This is a project I turned today at the request of Douglas. He wanted a blog done about the liming process. Midnight Serenade started as an ordinary straight grain piece of oak. I carved an unusual shape to give the grain some interest. I apologize the flash has burned the subtleties away in the photographs. The piece really changes shapes as you walk around it and different highlights and shadows are revealed. Midnight Serenade measures 2” tall by 7.5” wide. It is finished with black leather dye, 2 coats of sprayed lacquer, Liming Wax, and Briwax.

Midnight Serenade received it’s name because of how it sang while carving the outer rim.

For more details on the process check out my blog, Liming for a Song.

You need to start turning a stool to sit on in front of your lathe, RJ and I are talking right now, and were wondering if you take the time to go to the bathroom, and wonder if you are from the planet Krypton. You make great stuff and this is another one, beautiful again, what can I say? You are the man. This is an automatic generated message, do not reply.

If your asking if I wear boxers or briefs, it’s Depends. Thanks for the compliment. I have been working on a patriotic cane today, between this project and LJ, to donate to a disabled veteran. Boy this has been a challenge!

Trifern I got one for you, you should turn an orange agate toilet & paper holder that way you’d Never have to leave your lathe or maybe you could use catheter with a bag attached to your waist. Get on with your bad self !
No all joking aside… you sure turn some purdy stuff :0)

Joe,

I am running out of compliments to post about your work. They just seem to be getting better with each successive piece. But, as I have said before, this is a beautiful piece. And the blog was nice as well. Seeing work like this is truly inspirational and makes me want to move a lathe higher up on my tool wish list.

Keep on turnin’. I really appreciate seeing projects like this.

Trifern,

I’m with Scott. I, too, am running out of words to compliiment your work. It just keeps getting better and better. I’m totally broke, though, thinking about the cost of all those bowl blanks!

Keep turning!

I swear trifern everytime you turn something I tell myself to set up the lathe. I actually pulled a piece of 8/4 red oak out of the pile so I can glue it up into something. I pulled it to the front and walked away. hhmmmm….... keep it up. One day I’ll post a dedication piece to you for your inspiration. ;-)

Thanks for all the kind remarks. This project was a pleasant surprise. I was simply turning something for the purpose of doing a blog to show the liming technique. The shape and style ended up being quit pleasing.
