My mother turns 68 on Tuesday, so my kids said we should make her a candy box, you know, something to put next to the sofa to hide her stash from marauding grandchildren. I bought two big pieces of birdseye pine several years ago and I also had some nice spalted maple boards, so I paired them up. I’m not sure if it came out as too busy, but in the end, my mother will love it for what it is. The finish is 6 coats of high gloss lacquer. Now if I can only prevent those chocolates from melting on the priority mail journey from Georgia to New York I’ll be in good shape…

i like the looks of that lid. could spend some time looking at the “pictures” in it. Right off, I see a sheepdog looking right at me. Cool box.

Scott, I see the sheepdog now, that’s funny stuff… Too bad it’s not Jesus, I could sell it on eBay and pay off my car loan. Chris, I bought two pieces of birdseye pine on eBay maybe 8 years ago, they were 1×12x38 and highly figured. I had never seen it before either.

Yeah, it’s like cloudgazing. We’ve got faces in the woodwork around the house, a bear in the bathroom floor, an ape in the dining room, happy to discover my daughter stares at her ceiling and has her own pictures in the beadboard… haven’t seen Jesus in the woodwork either. LOL.

Great box… awesome find and wonderful use of the wood. I see the dog in there too! And to think someone would look at wood like you used and say to themselves… “yucky knot” and toss it. Not us! On a recent hike with our two boys, my wife noticed I was repeatedly commenting about spalting I was seeing on fallen trees. Well after a comment I made on an exceptional specimen (IMHO) that I wanted to lash down onto my back and hike out of the forest with said, “You can take the man out of his workshop, but you can’t take the workshop out of the man.” (No offence ladies please!). She’s my girl! ‘Guess I’m a LumberJock! :)

Nice box. I know what it’s like to have candy on hand for the grandkids when they come over, makes you wonder which they like more? mmmm…..

thought it was a bunny with a cute little bunny tail

great box. Definitely not too busy…. and perhaps a gift certificate for candy would be a good idea for inside it :)

Well done! (I bet there will be a tear in Mom’s eye when she gets this!)

You don’t see “birdseye” pine very often. Looks good.

Very cool. Don’t see birdseye pine very often (in fact, the first time I’d ever seen it is on 3 boards I have sitting in my shop). Now I’ve seen it finished, and its making me want to get on with my project!

nice work. =)
