This is a 1/8” captive ring tool made from a cut masonry nail.
I shaped the cat’s claw with a Dremel tool, then finished up on the grinder.

Very nice work on the homemade tool Gerry.
Do you have a practical use for these micro rings or is it all just because you can? Sounds like something I would do.

deparrott—Yes, as a matter of fact, I do.
I’ve been playing around with thin-stemmed goblets …... and intend to turn captive rings on the stems when my skill level improves.

Looks like you do have a good use for the new tool. Can’t wait to see the completed goblet with the ring. Thank you for posting.

A very unique handmade tool Gerry. I would of never thought of making a captive ring tool. Well done.

Dave—Thanks. Some turners make captive rings with a skew … I have done a few, but the mortality rate was too high, especially on the smaller rings. A tool like this is much faster and more reliable.
