Several months ago on another forum, I posted a challenge to build a project entirely with hand tools. After several months went by I finally got around to starting on my own project, a jewelry box, and thought I would post it here as well in case anyone was interested. I made a blog entry here with loads of progress shots.

The box is mahogany with a maple top panel. Finish is amber shellac on the whole box. I used some aniline dye on the maple panel to try to bring out the little bit of figure that was there (not much).

Thanks for looking, and please – critiques are very welcome.

Very nice and very good quality considering it was made from hand tools. Well done.

Great job. Very nice jewellery box. I like the beautiful foot, despite they are all cut by hand tools.
Thanks for the blog entry. I appreciate your home made marking & measuring tools.

Take care work safe.

Impressive, especially considering it is built with hand tools only. Great job!

Nicely done, elegant clean lines…very nice. Why did you choose red for the lining? I can’t imagine another colour looking better, just curious as to the selection process.

My daughter has been asking for me to make a jewelery box…now I have a concept to work toward…thanks.

Thanks folks.

Mark – The red felt lining was simply what I had in my cupboard. I have used bright green as well on other boxes, which I like.

Cheers,

Especially the curved part of the feet, what tools did you use to cut it out ?

SawdustMill – I ended up using a fret saw. I tried using my brace and bit but it just didn’t work out.

Hey awesome box!

I was wondering. Would you happen to have plans for this project?

Hi Jock, no – no plans I’m afraid. But it’s basically the same as one shown in David Freedman’s book “Box Making Basics. A very worthwhile book to have by the way – lots of ideas and tips.

Cheers,
