The Love of my Life (LOML) wakes up early, So I prepared this for her last night.

The pen is a “Long Clicker” wrapped in the root of a rose bush root that I processed some time ago. Voids and cracks were filled with Polyester resin tinted blue, the finish is a CA finish.

The heart Is made from Cherry, the arrow from Basswood, I found the plans here on LJ but can’t remember the name of the LJ or the name of the project.

The heart still needs some finish work.

Happy Valentine’s Day!!

Fair Warning on using rose bush root.

!. You have to deal with trimming back the rose bush and a lot of thorns!!

2. This particular rose bush was very old, and very large and about to die. The root was approximately 6” diameter and more than 12” in length. There was actually a lot more to it but that is what I could attempt to process anyways.

3. Being a root be prepared to deal with the following:

a. Soil and Rock embedded in the root ball.

b. Voids galore, a rose bush root is not like others. It was not a sold trunk like mass but lots of root tendrils compressed and grown together.

c. It was very very wet.

I only got 4 pen blanks out of that root mass (Not worth the effort and I won’t be doing it again.)

Very nice. Well the rose root might not have seemed worth it but at least you have a great story to tell about the toil you went through to make her present. And it turned out very nice.

Sweet and special gifts indeed! The rose root is worth all the effort, it has nice grains and looks great with the blue resin. Great job!

Have your say...
