Small Cedar Boxes

I made these as christmas gifts for my siblings. They’re made out of some recycled closet T&G aromatic cedar flooring.

It was a pretty basic design. I was originally going to use a small brass pin/nail as a hinge, but the end grain was so fragile I decided not to. I went with custom fitted, pressed in lids.

A tip for anyone thinking of making these cut the ends and bottom pieces extra wide and then you can sand them flush after the glue up. I also struggled to keep the sides perpendicular to the bottom. It was only on the third that I was able thought about cutting a square piece of mdf and clamping it in between each side in the middle of the box during the glue up. It worked very well.

They are finished with 3 or 4 coats of miniwax rub on poly, with the insides unfinished. I wanted it to keep the cedar’s amazing smell.
