Credit for this project goes to Jay Bates. Watch his video here:

I’ve needed to have a way to organize all of my lumber. Most of it is long cut offs or pallet wood and even some scrap pieces that “maybe I’ll use one day…” I can’t afford to do most of the plans I’ve seen, but when I saw Jay Bates do his I knew it was what I have been looking for.

I bought an 8 foot 2×4 to make these 3 brackets.

I started by cutting everything to size and trimming the 2×4s to 3 inches by cutting off the rounded edges.

Then I began cutting out the half lap joints. I did it like Jay does in his video where you take a few passes and break off the remaining wood (see pictures below), then clean it up.

Then I glued and screwed everything together, drew out a pattern, cut it out with the jig saw, then sanded to my line on the drum sander.

Then I pre-drilled the 2 holes in the front and put the pocket hole in the top and attached them to the wall.

Easy, affordable project. Thanks, Jay, for the inspiration.

I plan on making 6 more so that I can add above and below what you see in the pictures. I also had to buy some 3” screws, which will last me well beyond the next 6 I plan on building (I bought a 100-pack).

I’m so glad you put in that last paragraph, Chris. All I could think when reading was” he’s already got it filled, better get started on some more!” Well, they look nice and I know they’re useful.

I’ve made several, they’re stupid strong considering how easy they are to make.

Jay has some great stuff at his site if you’ve not been there before!

You don’t have any snow! Not fair.

And sometimes simple is the best way to accomplish a task.

BPatterson: thanks!

Fr. Thomas: oh, we had lots of snow here in north Georgia! It was because of the snow and me not being at work that I was able to finish these! It was freezing in the garage, but I got it done. The pictures at the beginning of this post were from last weekend when I got started.
