This is a commission project that one of my coworkers wanted for a birthday gift for her friend. I had a tight timeline to finish it and wasn’t able to do all I wanted to, like secure the glass with wood instead of glazing tips and mortise the hinges. I worked on this for 2 hours a night for five nights and finished as far as I could get at 1130 pm the night before delivery. I was so tired I slept most of the next morning and didn’t do a thing.
This case construction is Walnut mitered at that corners. Features dovetail keys and splines made from poplar. The Keys go all the way around the box, in two locations per corner, reinforcing the miters. The key on the front lower half, however, are false and are purely for looks. I wanted to keep it symmetrical without sacrificing function. When the drawer closes the keys line up perfectly. The top has splines to reinforce the mitered frame that holds the plexi-glass cover. Inside the case holds 10 watch display pillows that I got from Amazon. The drawer is for odds and ends stuff.
Hope you like it. The customer was very pleased and happy to get it.

Really like the dovetail splines and the way you integrated them into the drawer.

Thank you. The splines in the drawer were kind of a last-minute decision. But it was a challenge that I haven’t done before and thought I would give it a shot. I think it turned out good.

Nice job on this display case/box. I especially like how you did the dovetail keys on the drawers.

Very nice. Love the look of the splines, especially how you used them with the drawer. Good work!

Thanks you guys. That seems to be the consensus about the splines…. ;)
