Bunk Beds

GOOD EVENING, LUMBERJOCKS!!

I finally have a project to show off. I am the dad of 6 kids, so needless to say, bunk beds are essential in our house.

I copied a set that a friend of mine made up on the fly. It’s mainly just a box for the mattress with guardrails and ladder attached. Unfortunately, I still have to get the guards and the ladder attached. But the kids are sleeping on them and LOVING them!

We needed them badly, so they are just bare wood right now. Basic construction, like I said, is just two boxes, one for each mattress, with 4 legs. There is a 2×4 across the middle at each end and in the middle. I started out with 3 1×4’s running lengthwise (my friend’s recommendation) in the first set, but that just left too much mattress drooping. I replaced that with a base of 5/8 plywood on the 2×4’s. The plywood is not screwed down or anything, so that if I have to move the beds, it’s easily removable.

I know, it’s not much, but it’s a start for this newbie.

Nice job. It’s amazing you hade time to build this with 6 kids at home!

Remember, kids care a lot less about those type of things (not finished) than you do. They just love having some neat beds to sleep in. You can be proud of your first project. Keep working at it and your skills will improve.
