This was a fun project; I made a few sets for Christmas presents a couple years ago. I purchased the thin strips and copper tacks from www.shakerovalbox.com. The wood is maple and the tops are Birdseye maple veneer. I may have to make some this year too.

They look like they’re sitting still to me…
Seriously—lived for 6 years near “Shakertown” in central Kentucky. Love these boxes—I’ll have to check out that website. Thanks for posting!!

Beautiful boxes. I need to get my kit out and build it. I have been waiting for about five years. I guess it is about time to do it. That sounds like a good one-day project on a cool day this fall.

Timbo; I made 5 a couple of years ago. Our Mason Dixon Woodworkers club is having a Shaker Box Class the last weekend of this month. We can make the oval boxes or the handled baskets. I’ll probably go for the handled baskets.
I bought the patterns and tacks from the Shaker Box people also but I’ve not cut up any wood yet to make them. This year we are using cherry wood.
Rob it’s a two day job. You steam or heat bend the wood and then let it dry overnight and then finish the boxes the next day.
Timbo: I just noticed that your bands go to the left, I always thought that the Shaker Boxes went to the right. Great looking boxes and nice birds eye.
What sizes did you build. I think we are building size 1 to 5 this year. We have this class every year and we can take 10 people for the class.

Another great looking project. Well done. Karson, does it make a difference which way the bands go? Just curious because I have never paid that much attention to them. Maybe I can find a class close to me to learn to make them.
