I am relatively new to turning so more than a few of the predecessors of this bowl ended up in the fire pile but I kind of liked this one. Spalted Ash (I think), the wood was a freecycle find. The walls are a bit thicker than I would like, I probably need to splurge on some calipers. Creating spalted wood or in my case forgetting I left the wood behind the garage seems to play to a number of my strengths though…

Came up a fine looking bowl. Thin walls / thick walls – doesn’t matter.
Whenever you’re happy with the look of it, it’s finished.

Great. For a new turner you took on a difficult wood to work with and the results came out well.
Now you need to work with something easier like a fruit wood.

Thanks to all for the comments and welcome.

Les, I am keeping my eye out for some pear on CL. Until then I am working with black walnut, and ash and maple spalted to various degrees. I do look forward to working with something a bit more stable…

Very nice bowl and spalted ash. Your doing a great job keep turning them out and I am sure it will all become second nature in turning. I have yet to start turning myself but that day is not far away and looking forward to it.
Thanks for sharing.
