Project Information

A friend had me build this birdhouse bench as a Christmas present for her grandmother this past year. I made the posts from cedar since they will be on the ground, then the seat and arms from pine, and the back from fence pickets.

I used my Kreg pocket jig for all the joints so no screw is visible except the four on the back holding on those cross members in the dadoes. I also made the birdhouses removable so they can be cleaned out.

You can't really tell in the photo but after I primed and painted everything, I took some sand paper and distressed it slightly then put on three coats of polycrylic to seal it.

If you would like step by step instructions, you can find them posted on my personal blog.

This project is for the birds literally speaking. It is cool and unique. Not sure if the seat will stay clean enough to sit on with birds flying around. lol Was the polycrylic you used for outdoor use? Well done and nice work.

: ) You're probably right, but she wanted real birdhouses so I made them. I doubt any bird will actually make a home in the houses, but better safe than sorry.

You know, the can said it's for outdoor use but everything I read online from real woodworkers says it doesn't have UV inhibitors so it won't hold up in the direct sunlight…so I'm not sure. Since I knew this would be under a covered porch, I went ahead and used it because it won't yellow the white paint over time.

Cool and unique bench! Looks sturdy and the birdhouses are nice touches. I'm sure she was delighted with it. Great job!
