Coat rack with antique doorknobs for coat hangers.
The story behind the doorknobs goes back to when I was a kid and my mom wanted to make a doorknob coat rack which turned into a 2×4 with a few doorknobs on it that never left the basement. I guess I poked fun at it too much as a kid because for a recent birthday all I got was a set of antique doorknobs… Opps.
Started the project by looking for a functional coat rack online. Found one with a similar structure and expanded on the design from there. Like all of my projects so far it is Maple, Cherry and Walnut without using hardware, except in this case to attach the doorknobs. Joints are a mixture of rabbits and tongue and groove with maple pins. As the cherry ages I am excited to see the contrast of the maple pins, the fresh cut cherry hides them very well. I routed out edges all along the front and put in a proud maple inlay
It has 6 antique doorknobs and the hooked-edges on either side can also hang coats if needed. Has a decent amount of storage space on the shelves but so far the wife has taken them over for decorations only. It is attached to the wall via a french cleat.
