Frank’s blog on finishing has made me do some thinking about my projects. I determined that if I am making a piece that is supposed to be picked up and felt, it needed to be pleasing to the touch. While turning this piece, I constantly closed my eyes and felt the curves. If it felt right, it would look right. It is kind of a twist on hand and eye coordination. The final test was to buff the top coat with 0000 steel wool until the surface was sensuous. I hope this piece passes the final exam.
It is turned from a piece of maple that has a lot going on; blisters, birdseye, bark intrusions and tiger stripes. It measures 4.5” tall by 11” wide. I finished it with Seal-A-Cell, Wipe-On Poly and Briwax. I welcome all feedback.

I really like your turnings. Makes me want to turn something. I’m bummed that I don’t have and can’t afford the material to do so. : ( Thanks for posting

I give it an A+
The inside really shows off the many features you described. Thanks for sharing your process of ‘touch’ design.

Joe,
It may be an optical illusion, but I really like the way the outside wall and the inside wall appear to have different curvatures so that the wall thickness varies from the opening to the bottom of the bowl.
Was this piece green when you turned it or did you use your alcohol soak?

Awesome work as usual Trifern! This post led me to your other turnings, you are definantely a master turner. Are you using a four-jaw chuck or is this off of a face plate? Damn fine job man, damn fine.

Lew, it is an optical illusion. The walls are pretty consistent. It is hard for me to get a good representation through photography. This was a dry piece of timber, not green.
Christopher, I actually used a home made single screw chuck to rough turn and shape the outside. I then chucked it with a three jaw chuck for turning the inside.
Douglas, I believe you are either growing or dying. I hope to always be a student.

It’s hard to go wrong when you start with a piece of wood that looks that great. Another awesome piece.

Looks great, but as you mentioned, it’s just as (or more?) important to feel good.

Hey Scott, I did a blog earlier about turning green and denatured alcohol aiding in the drying process.

Joe the shape and grain are fabulous. I’ve been meaning to say also, that as well as turning out some great pieces, you’re also taking some great photos of your work too.
Thanks for posting it.
