Diamonds are forever in any designs. It started from this ….
Transformation of the most famous tumbling blocks had resulted in this design the following illusions:
1. Mitsubishi emblem – 3 diamonds interlaced at one point making a perfect union. That is why it is called diamond motors.
2. Tumbling blocks – the joining of 3 cubes in isometric viewing on top yields to a 3 direction facets.
3. Star of David – the two inverted Mitsubishi emblem can be viewed as 6 pointed star making the 3rd colour as the background.
4. Jack’s stone – the children play … mounting these cubes created a 3 cubes with hidden 3 more as imaginary. The six pointed jack stones are incorporated in the design.
But the truth… it makes me dizzy specially when looking at the corners and the sides… HOW DID I MANAGE THE INTEGRATION?..
The construction is easy… I cut all the pieces by backsaw using a special mitering box. The rhombus (diamonds) were cut into pieces then laminated in pairs. All the sides were cut to size then planed on the side edges to 60 deg. Then glued to the hexagon top. This way I can make 45 deg miter using the portable router. Somewhere I blog this method already. I will try to link it later.
Notice the edge of the lid that there are two different faces. The outside has green while the inside portion has no green instead orange (narra). The green pieces are so limited so I sliced each and glued it with narra. While the yellow (jackfruit that were left over from the musical instrument bandurria sound boards) are glued together with brown (ipil).
The base was also different design. To make the construction easy, I finished first the lid then use it as the model for making the sides of the base. Then I make a groove (5/16 inch) to the base or bottom board. That will hold the side in place and will be strong. The same process for making the 60 degree miter was done with a hand plane.
Notice also that the outside portion is not finished with any varnish. It is just as natural as it is. The reason is that all our visitors last Christmas is always asking whether the colors were stained and they are amazed how the wood natural colours are match. This will prove that myth.
The good thing with this box… I receive a lot of phrases from those friends who came and touch it. I call this diamonds are forever because I can feel that as soon as they see this box… a tap in my shoulder is the one I received and this will last forever… It gives also a lot of inspiration to me to continue my woodworking hobby despite of my busy days. Thanks to all LJs who also inspire me.
Thank you for reading and have a nice day.
