Nice work, a real eye-grabber. And that antler-crown handle is distinctive. Please tell us more about the top, what it’s made of, how you joined it, etc. The hinge too.

The top is Poplar with a strip of Cocobolo in the middle. They are joined with 2 # 20 biscuits on either side. The hinge is just a 3/32” brass rod with the end covered over. Nothing special. I used the Zebra as my Woodcraft store had a piece with a splintered edge on sale for about $12. It was a 3/4” x 6” x 24” and I could cut away the bad edge. I use antler crowns for a lot of my boxes. I have a friend who makes pens with antler. The crowns are of no use to him as they are too big around so I get a box full every couple of months. The antler when sanded with 1200 grit can be polished to a nice shine. I also make canes and use these big pieces of antler for handles.

Due to some major health issues, I have been away from my shop for several years. Now I am stronger than I have been for a long time so I am back to woodworking. Most of these boxes are just for practicing skills I had lost. I still have many mistakes but I am slowly getting back the skill I had lost. Joinery is a favorite thing and making items without any kind of fasteners like nails or screws is something I really enjoy. Glad you like some of my projects. They will probably wind up on a shelf in the shop unless a grandkid wants one. It just practice that I need.
