This was my first large-scale furniture building experience. I came up with a fairly simple design which would 1) fit exactly behind our couch and 2) hold a whole lot of books. I’m glad to say, it accomplished both of those purposes. I used solid poplar boards (from Lowes) and dado construction. The staining was difficult (I didn’t know that poplar would be tough to stain without serious blotching), but using a gel stain solved the problem really well.

It looks great and functions as intended. That’s what it’s all about.
