I was visiting family in California, and found a burl of unknown origin sitting in their yard. I told my sister-in-law I’d make a box out of it for her if I could take it off her hands.
It turns out there wasn’t a really good way to slice it, so I decided to go for the natural edge look and make a box that can’t hold stuff. :) I was lucky it held together for slicing since the wood was really old and weathered.
I used a scrap of walnut for the base, and cut the burl so I could make it look like three of the four edges wrap around as a continuous grain. You can see the book matching on the front corner. It’s about 4×4” and 3” tall.
The cool part is I have the burl leftovers for other projects now. There’s enough to do some drawer pulls or something like that.
