Here is another fun little mid century project. The Plant Stand.

I first ran across this little guy when I was researching information on the builder of my MCM home. I saw ads and old drawings of it in some builder records magazines from the 50’s and just loved it right away. Of course if you follow MCM design you know this plant stand is a staple and can still be had today.

Made of solid walnut dowels, I hand carved the curve in the cross piece to accept the dowel. The joint is reinforced with a floating mortise and tenon. Finish is Arm R Seal. I think the design is just great and get a kick out of the fact that the pieces nest together. It holds a ton of weight, too.

quite nice and practical, as it is not glued. i wonder if it will work for small pots.

Each leg is actually glued to its rail. I make these in a bunch of sizes to fit all kinds of pots.

David, I love these plant stands. What tools did you use to get the curve between the flat board and the dowel rod. Any advice would be appreciated as im hoping to make some. Thanks.

This is really awesome and I was thinking of making something very similar here soon as well. Your’s looks much easier than what I had planned and I like the dowels as well. Very nice!
