Bookcase

It all started one afternoon with a visit to the local furniture warehouse. I wanted a solid bookcase to display all those leather bound books. Let just say I was experiencing a bit of sticker shock as I meandered around the local shops. Why would I pay the any amount of money for something I know I could build myself. One problem… I didn’t own a table saw.

To make a short story even shorter, I spent the next month playing with my “new to me” cabinet saw and building this project. Not completely impressed with the color of the georgian cherry gel stain, but it sure does look nice with all them books on it.

did you work off of a plan to build this? Also, what wood did you use? Some of it looks like oak.

It is all made with oak using the plans for the Towering Tomes Bookcase found at http://www.woodstore.net. It was the only bookcase plan that was more than just three sided box with shelves. Certainly was a blast and turned out to be easier than I first thought. The cover photo was a bit intimidating to me with all of the molding, flutes, and arch. It was just enough of a challenge that I enjoyed coming up with ways to make it with the tools I have. Table saw, router, and jig saw. I used two coats of GF Gel Stain then finished it with 3 coats of General Finish Semi Gloss.

Fine work on that well made bookcase. Great design and finish. It’s a beautiful addition to the house.

Thanks Bo!

Matt, that is correct. It was a gel stain and was rather forgiving when I put it on. I was able to cover large sections then go back and wipe if off achieving an even stain.

Have your say...
