my kitchen

This is my kitchen. This was my little rush back in ‘06. We were trying to get it done for x-mas and ended up working on it until 2am Christmas day. Boy was I tired on Christmas. But, we wanted to have family over to our house for the holidays and couldn’t with such a huge mess. The granite guy works with me on regular jobs and really stepped up and got his part done. The material is Alder stained with Varathane Gunstock. We did this about the same time they started introducing those products heavily (not to say they weren’t already out but I hadn’t heard of them) and thought we’d give them a whurl. We no longer use those products. Anyhow, the two columns next to the stove pull out. Ones a utensil holder and ones a spice rack. I put wooden kidney shaped lazysusans instead of plastic. There is a pull out trash bin with soft close guides. All drawers are dovetailed with blum tandem undermounts with softclose. I even put the blum soft close on the doors. LOL. I had to keep the original appliances because I’m a poor boy and really couldn’t afford to do any of it, we just got the bug and hated the original kitchen with a passion. I figure with everything in this kitchen including tile and granite it set us back upwards to 9 grand. The doors are all inset and the frames are beaded. There are pull out trays in all the base cabinets. We put in all new lighting in the ceiling, undercabinet lights, and lights in the two corner cabinets. My ex wife chose the valance. It went perfect behind the wooden valance. Anyhow, enjoy.

A beautiful looking kitchen. I’m just starting on mine for our home In Delaware. I haven’t started posting any of the blogs yet on construction.

A very nice job. I notice you said ex-wife. Are you still part owner of this creation.

I am full owner. She couldn’t afford to have the mortgage, so I took it on. She figured it would be best if I forclosed rather then her. LOL. She just took everything else. Literally. But, it is a good thing that I had been making pieces throughout our marriage. Pretty much refurnished it when she left. hehe. I had to buy some beds, employee gave me a couch, and a customer gave me a $7,000 dining room set. (completely equiped with 6 chairs, table with leaves, China cabinet, and buffet. Very nice freeby indeed) We did their entire house. Their project is absolutely beautiful and I would love to share pics. However, they didn’t let us take them because it was clustered and they wanted to get professional pictures. I have yet to see any.
Thanks for the comment and I can’t wait to see your finished kitchen.

This is a beautiful kitchen. As usual you did a wonderful job on the details- the crown, overall design and valence.

Thanks for sharing. This is a job that speaks volumes about your level of craftsmanship.

Your kitchen is great. I like the wide crown you used. It really helps the look. And your wife did good on the valance. It helps set off the whole kitchen.

That’s a really nice looking kitchen. I am about to get started on mine and I was planning on using alder with a stain that’s pretty close to what you used. You’re saying in your comments you don’t use the varathane stain anymore, any particular reason? What would you recommend instead ? Thanks.

The varathane product is fine so long as you use varathane finishes for compatablility purposes. I make my own stains now and use Target shellac and waterborne lacquer for finish. Thanks for the comments.

Excellent work! I like the warmth of the room, and the details of raised panels and crown molding. Thanks for posting.
