This is my first project post!!! I have been a member for a year now. Just been watching for the time. All of the work that is posted on this site is GREAT. I hope I can some how fit in. ;)

This is the first winged box / bowl I had ever made. After I was done I still had all my fingers and the Lathe was still like new. I made this as a gift to my lovely bride of 16 years. I couldn’t afford to put 16 diamonds in it so I placed 16 Sorosky crystals inside instead.
The winged bowl is made of Claro Walnut and the lid is made of hardrock white Maple and the finial is Ipe’.
The bowl is about 4” wide X 10” long and stands about 4” tall.
Note on the Ipe’ – glues do not work on this wood. So to “glue” the finial in place I scored the bottom of the finial with a dremel tool and used hot glue on the “odd shape” to keep it attached to the main part of the lid. Always wear dust protection when using Ipe’.

Let me know what you all think! I will add more pics when I can get them on here.

Thank you to all of you for the kind comments. The bowl is finished with rattle can lacquer. It was fun to make and I like the “danger” part of this kind of turning. Keeps you on your toes making sure you respect the machine and the process.

Lovely gift, like the unique shape and attractive wood mix. I’m sure your wife loves it. Great turning!

Have your say...
