Two cutting boards that I made for Christmas gifts

1. “Three Heart Board” for my wife – yellowheart, purpleheart, and red heart with walnut & maple strip accents

2. Basketweave Board for my future daughter-in-law – purpleheart, walnut, & maple. Glue up was tricky on this one! :-)

Where did you get the idea/plan for the basket weave board? I’d be interested in learning the process.

Hi Matt – I got my inspiration from several similar boards posted here on LJ’s. However, Seymoreknots was the one that caught my eye the most. He graciously provided dimensions for a cut list. I’d be glad to pass them along. Just PM me and I’ll shoot ‘em over to you. The glue up’s a bit tricky because you have so many parts to glue during the open window. I ended up doing them in two halves, which didn’t work out great as I had to go back and fill in some gaps when there was some clamp failure. I used Titebond III for it’s waterproof qualities. In retrospect, I think I’d probably go with Titebond II Extend as it’s water resistant and cutting boards are rarely submersed or flooded with liquid so it would likely hold up under normal use. The TBII Extend just gives you longer open working time and makes it easier to do all at once. Or, you could have one or two assistants applying glue at the same time as you are and get it all done within the window. Anyway, best of luck!

Nice cutting boards! Just curious; are all the intersections in the basket weave pattern made from separate pieces, or do the pieces interlock with dadoes?

@Rob – they’re all separate pieces.

Gorgeous boards! The wood colors and patterns are really attractive especially the basket weave. Awesome work!
