I used an old news paper pattern from 1920’s for this. The motion is not as fluid as I would like (the original was designed to be made of paper, where mine is wood). When his tail is pushed down both hands and his head lift up. I also had to enlarge the head as the one in the original pattern was way too small.

Very Cool. Love seeing these. If you don’t mind may have to borrow.

Nice idea. Some places are running through my mind in which I would place it.

Nice work. Any chance you can put up a link to a video? How about adding a photo of the back with the mechanism?

If anyone is interested, the pattern for this and many more can be found at Give it time to load and they may be large graphics files. Takes a while for my system.

I keep meaning to make the moving Santa as an animated yard art for Christmas.

Thanks for the nice comments. I would be glad to post a picture of the back, however, it will take me a few weeks. I serve as a missionary deep in the bush of West Africa, and only have access to the internet when I come into town to resupply.

One thing that I would change from my first design would be to use small dowels ( or bamboo skewers) instead of nails. This should make it move a little smother.
