Deployed Sound System

During one of my deployments I worked with an army loadmaster who had bought a really pricey Bose sound system for his iPod so that the crew could listen to some tunes while they were doing their preflights and postflights in the aircraft. But he had a busted ill fitting plastic container to carry it in, so he asked me to make him a container for it that would:

1) Have a carry handle
2) Be tough enough so that they could strap it down
3) Have a section to hold all of the cords and plugs and things
4) Keep everything from falling during maneuverers in flight
and 5) Have some way to mount the speakers on top so they wouldn’t fall off

Made it out of some scrounged plywood, scrounged brads, scrounged nails, etc. And since I do some fabric fabrication too, I had some felt to glue inside of it so that nothing would get scratched or dinged up. Free-handed the writing on the side as a gag, since it looked like an Amish boom box. And was able to get the CE folks to lend me a router to finish the handle, which is just made from a chunk of 2×4 cut into shape with a jigsaw (also borrowed!)

DanaBabcock, nice job on the Amish boom box. I spent 2012 in country and had many adventures scrounging supplies and tools. I once made a cardboard bookshelf and laptop stand. I found making custom knives the easiest to work on deployments.

Wish you well on future deployments.

Have your say...
