This is my first attempt at making a chessboard. The project started off as just a chessboard and ended up getting bigger. I ended up designing and making the chessboard with storage box that has two drawers to store all of the pieces. I have not finished the project entirely, I’m still debating as to which finish I would like to use.
The dovetail joints were my first attempt as well. I made these using my new scroll saw.

The chess pieces will be posted at a later date, as I am in progress of cutting each of the pieces with the scroll saw. Each piece was designed by me as well.

I love the dovetails, I did not have the nerve to try and make these for my chessboard I am building. What woods did you use for the squares?

The wood is pine. I have had the pieces sitting around for several years. They were supposed to be used for shelves. So the gold coloring is more from the sun/aging. The red color is just a water based dye, I think its barn red. I have put several coats of danish oil on the board. The rest is pine that I bought recently.
The dovetails… I practiced on several scrap pieces first. I wanted a bit of a challenge. I don’t have many fancy tools so I find other ways to make something using what I have on hand. The scroll saw worked great to cut them. It took a bit of thinking to figure out the angles and how to cut them.

This is a great piece of work. I really like the dovetails, you’ve done a fantastic job.
