My Christmas present to myself was to retrofit a leg vise onto my old bench. It is made up a beam of yellow pine out of the abbey church. The idea for the screw mechanism I picked up from Allen Finch in his article, ”$20 Leg Vise,” in the April/May 2011 issue of American Woodworker.

More details about the build can be seen on YouTube (MonkWerks: Retrofitted Leg Vise)

A man just has to love ingenuity and a practical approach to shop challenges. Well done! I have to check out that article – I think I have another project for my shop. Thanks for the post.

Great job! Do you have a link to the Allen Finch article? I’m building a couple of benches right now and that looks like a great option for my smaller bench that will be kept in my apartment.

Thanks for all the positive comments.
I found a copy of the article on Scribd, Google’s link to American Woodworker appears to be dead, though the Internet Archive did have a snapshot of the page.

You really shouldn’t steal wood from churches….

@12strings
Well … It was just kinda sitting there, and I didn’t think anyone would notice it missing. Though the abbot didn’t seem too pleased when I placed the corpus from the cross in his choir stall. ;)

If it had been stolen wood, would the Church consider you to have a leg vise vice? XD

Cool project, Father. Thanks for sharing.

Have your say...
