My wife wanted a plate rack to sit above our kitchen cabinets to display some decorative dishes in her accent color. I based this on a design from H.H. Windsor’s Popular Mechanics Mission Furniture Handbook in 1912. My version only has one level rather than two because of height considerations.

This was done almost entirely with hand tools, except for the electric drill I used to pre-drill for the nails. (I still need to find an egg-beater drill somewhere).

Good job! I have yet to build a project using only hand tools. I hope to some day. I only hope to do as well as you did!

Don’t be afraid to step away from the table saw! I focused mainly on traditional tools because I inherited my father’s and grandfather’s hand tools from the 1930s, but as Jim Tolpin’s book The New Traditional Woodworker points out, there’s a journey from tool set to skill set to mindset. Now my power tools gather more dust than they disperse…
