I have a friend and co-worker who recently vacationed in Oregon. She surprised me on her return with three nice pieces of myrtle wood. She said she instantly thought of me when she was touring the gift shops full of wooden art. She managed to lug this pieces back home and gave them to me with the stipulation I would make her a vase. I’m not sure what she had in mind, but this is what came out of one of the chunks.
It measures 3.5” wide by 9.5” tall. It is finished with Seal-A-Cell, Wipe-On Poly, and Briwax. I hope she likes it.

very nice! i know i would love that. i really like how the neck is skinny and then it transitions into the larger middle section. and the two beads add a great touch.

This is a really nice vase Like Teenage I like the taper from the lip to the bottom. I also really like Myrtle its one of my favorites .It can range in color from a yellow-gold with black to diff. browns to a greenish color most common is a yellowish. Great Job! P.S. Trifern you must have a Hammock tied to your lathe lol.

Nice vase Trifern. The Myrtle down under is a darker wood & is used a lot in turning, especially burls.

Myrtle is one of my favorite woods to turn. Your “vessel” looks great (he says with his pinky in the air while drinking his morning coffee). That’s the art lover in me. Gallery quality my man.

I delivered to goods to my friend yesterday. She was speechless at first, then all she kept say is ” That is so beautiful!” The expression of gratitude on her face was priceless.
Thank you everyone for the kind remarks. I really appreciate them all.
Coming soon to a post near you, “Inside Rhapsody.” A piece that expresses black and blue.

A very fasinating piece.
I have always loved “Oregon Myrtle” admiring it in the many tourist shops on the Oregon Coast.
What I didn’t know—until a couple weeks ago (Enlightened by FWW #200 (OCT 2008) is that “Oregon Mytrle” is the lumber of the “Bay Laurel”, known locally as California Bay.
H—-, I know where some are!, I have put a leaf (small leaf and only one) in a bottle of Red Wine vinegar for a few months to make a really tasty Salad Vinegar.
Since I saw the article I have been thinking about whether or not, an individual I know , would let me cut down a tree on his property of many acres (not me, I would hire it done) . Haven’t had the guts to approach him, probably never will.

Joe, that is absolutely beautiful. Fantastic design. I can’t believe how many great looking pieces you can turn out.
I was wondering…is the inside bored out?... or hollowed out?

Thanks Martin, This piece is hollowed down several inches to blend in with the bore. The bore is the diameter so the neck is about 3/16” thick.
