I’ve seen versions of these holders that are made like bandsaw boxes, but these are made a little bit differently. I begin by building up the solid wood blank with the pattern in the wood that I want. Then I resaw the board into roughly two equal pieces. I then joint the bandsawn sides flat again and make sure that everything lines up. Then I built a jig to hold each half while I router out all but about 3/16”. Once the two halves have been routered, I glue them back together, then sand and give it the final shape. A LOT of work, but they’ve been pretty well received.
