Well here is the last of my Christmas presents. This year I was blessed to become the Godfather of baby Francis (who I call my PopeBaby). I wasn’t sure what to give him, but I was experimenting with other test tube vases and thought a scrollsaw spiral might make a cool vase. Only problem with this idea is, well, I’d never tried a scrollsaw spiral in my life. I had seen a video on youtube once… Close enough. Let’s buy a poplar dowel and give it a shot.

They turned out surprisingly cool, in my opinion. I did have some trouble locating centers and drilling straight, but my hope was that filling them with greens would cover a lot of flaws, and that seems to be the case. Given that Francis is only a few months old, I kinda figured candles and flames were out. I went to the craft store and picked up some glittery options in Advent colors to use instead.

Cut the base from a walnut leftover and drilled for the dowels, i coated that with lacquer. I left the poplar unfinished, mostly because I couldn’t think of a good way to cover the complex form of the spiral, and have no experience trying to dip (don’t you still have to wipe it down?) If anyone has a good idea on how to finish these, please include in a reply. I think it still looks good unfinished, and it shouldn’t get abused or beat up too badly.
