A Sled For My Grandson’s Birthday

I put together this sled for my grandson, it is a based on the pull behind sleds parents used to take their children through the snow. It is made out of poplar and has several coats of paint on it to protect if from the elements. I have waxed up the runners quite well and it so it will glide through the snow. I engraved a train on the front of the seat using my laser engraver, and added a red pinstripe around the seat bottom. It was a fun project to make, I know that my grandson will fit in it this year but will be too big for it next year, so I will have to start planning a replacement, planned obsolescence, it is what keeps us grandpa’s in the shop.

I love it!!! The styling and colors are perfect. Kind of reminds me of Superman.
Maybe you could put some sort of small rope handles or something like that on the armrests, but that’s just nitpicking.
If I had any small kids in the family, I might “borrow” your design!
Super super job. He will love it.

ps. I read that book in college a loooong time ago by Vance Packard – stuck with me ever since.

Sorry UncleStumpy, but I had never heard of Vance Packard, I did look up his work on the internet this morning. The statement I use as my tag line I put together from life experience, I had it printed up into signs and had put up in every office for the 2,500 employees I took care of around the world for the company I worked for.

I will have to take a closer look at some of Vance’s work.

Nice sled Otto.
If I remember correctly “American Woodshop” did an episode on how to build a bent runner sled.

This is a cool looking sleigh. I only wish I had grandchildren to make one for. Great build and color.
