My wife wanted a box to keep cards and mementos in so I came up with the one shown here. Sides are 1/2” maple with walnut keys. I didn’t have a piece left that was wide enough for the top, just narrower pieces from cutting the sides, so I glued them up with a couple of pieces of walnut for contrast (jointed the edges on the router table since I don’t have a jointer). Couldn’t match the grain as well as I would have liked, but I’m quite pleased with the result. Top pivots on two concealed 1/8” brass pins inserted into the side of the box.
Finish was two coats of Watco Danish Natural, three coats of poly gloss and one coat of poly satin.

It looks like every other box. Oh the splines look great, nice color difference. oh yea also the top fitting inside and the handle desigined into the top, oh yea the wood looks great. The cover design is nice as well. Maybe I was wrong this is a great box and a lot of design before you even started making saw dust. You sure make it look easy.
Nice project. You sure work hard to keep you wife happy. I hope you enjoy the benifits.

Nice looking box. The side grain gives it a nice flowing look. The bands on the lid look good too. Great job.

Nice looking, I think its great that you dealt with your materials shortage by turning it into a successful design element.

There is just nothing left to say except ”BEAUTIFUL” If you look at some of my boxes, the lids have stripes for the very same reason. You are master at what you do!

A very beautiful box. The lid design is good. Idea of putting two concealed brass pins for the top to pivot is novel.

I used my router table for years to joint edges for glue ups before I was able to afford a jointer . Now I can joint both faces and edges with my antique Rockwell Delta 6” jointer….picked it up for $125 from a retired gentleman that was moving to Florida : ) Oh yeah , That is a great looking box that you created !!!
