My daughter Stacy had a range hood, with a cabinet above. She wants to install a microwave instead of the range hood. This required shortening the 30 inch tall cabinet by 10.5 inches. She wanted me to try to salvage the old cabinet versus buying or making a new one.

I used a combination of doweling and Kreg pocket screws to re-attach the lower and upper pieces after sawing.

It is extremely difficult to hide saw marks across the grain. This cabinet turned out pretty nice, but with the right lighting and right angle, you can still see traces of the saw marks. Hopefully it will pass my daughter’s inspection.

To read more about my trials & tribulations of shortening this cabinet, see my web site.

I think you did a good job, your daughter will certainly be happy. Compliments.
