I was talking to a friend at family a Christmas party and he told me he wanted to get into building wooden bows. I told him to come over the next day and we would make one. He had a link to a youtube video and I had the shop and tools so we started at about 7:30pm and finished and had the shop cleaned up by 3:00am. This was a fun project and we hope to do it again in the future.

I had to add this to prove I was really there. Wow I don’t like pictures of the top of my head.

Nice work. I love archery but the thought of making my own bow 50 years ago was unthinkable for me. I have been doing woodworking for about 30 or so years and still don,t if I could do it. I admire you guys for your accomplishment. Keep up the good work.

Jeff, looks like an interesting project. Aren’t wooden bows these days usually made from laminations??

poospleasures: This is a very simple bow that any wood worker could make. I don’t know how it would stack up against other bows but it looks great and it was a fun project.

Belg1960: I think most of them are and we talked about trying that next. This was the first one I had ever tried and we only had one night to get it done before he had to leave.

Many bows now are laminated but there are a whole bunch of traditional archers who make bows from wood like Jeff’s bow. Thanks for sharing and all the links. BTW, what did you use to finish it?

For the finish we just used some Enduro-var that I had on the shelf. I am not sure if that’s a good finish for a bow or not. If anyone knows what is best for a bow please post it.

Guys, I guess its the same as the difference between the hand tool versus the power tool debate. Each has its place and loyal following. Its a great project which ever way you slice it.

What wood are you using?

Crossbow?

Don’t you mean “Longbow”?

Whatever, it is, it’s cool.

Underdog:

We used hard maple and yes it’s a longbow.
