Ambrosia Step Stool

This started as a simple stool that my wife insisted her mother needed to get into a new bed while she was visiting for Christmas. She was mildly amused and didn’t need it at all, but I had already started it.

I found a great deal on a piece of Ambrosia Maple that fit the size I was looking for and I was off. Little did I know how much this would kick my butt. This was my first major project with hand cut dovetails and the first with maple.

I don’t know if all maple is this hard or Ambrosia maple is especially hard or I just got lucky with a piece of stone, but this wood is hard. I learned a lot about filling gappy joints with small pieces. I think I reduced every sharp chisel I have to something resembling a butter knife, but it is together. A little more sanding, a sealer coat and then I am done, but I am so glad I got to this point, I decided to post it now.

Looks great, I love ambrosia maple anyway, I found 6 boards that were 14” to 20” wide, two and half in. thick by 12’ to 14’ long, all for $100.00 each. I am going back with the truck as soon as the weather get better. To me its a great deal, I am always in my car when I need my truck !

Thanks for a great project.
