I finally got around to making a couple of these over the holidays. I used curly maple for the body and cherry for the dowel. Pretty easy to make and open to variation. I got the idea and basic plans from Steve over at Woodworking for Mere Mortals. I followed Marc’s Pop Goes the Maple instructions for the finish…trans tint in shellac, then Seal-a-Cell.

Love the maple. Did you not put in a magnet to keep it closed?

No, I used a 3/16 inch dowel and hole, and glued the top to the dowel while letting the dowel spin freely in the body of the box. I attached a nut to the end of the dowel similar to the way Steve did for his box, I just opted to let the drag from the dowel in the hole be enough to keep the box from flying open. I just wanted to keep things more simple and clean.

Beautiful box! The wood is gorgeous as well as the finish. Great work!
